Helping VT Practices
Survive, Rebuild & Grow
During Challenging Times
Social distancing has presented many challenges to vision therapy practices. Some of the challenges have been easier to navigate than others. Maximizing new patient encounters is one of the most important challenges you need to address.
It is vital that the results of each new patient encounter is maximized and that you don't lose people who need your care. Most patients are lost because they lack the necessary understanding of why the treatment plan is needed.
When patients don't understand what the doctor and/or staff have said they respond in a variety of different ways, some of which include:
"Does my insurance cover it?" This is simple if their insurance does cover it. However, if it doesn't, what do you say? and, how long does it take? do you have enough time before the next patient?
"OK" The patient or parent appears to agree and presents no objections or questions. She may even schedule the appointment before leaving. Only to call back later and cancel it.
"I need to talk to my husband..." While in many cases this can be what is called a 'valid objection,' it can also occur when the parent doesn't understand. This becomes more obvious when the parent seems to 'disappear.'
"We can't afford it." This is a very polite way to close the door to continuing the conversation.
The best case scenario is where the parent asks lots of questions. Unfortunately, the PPE-schedule doesn't give you the time you need. Your staff tries to follow-up to further explain and schedule, but the parent doesn't answer and doesn't return the calls or emails.
Now is the time for an effective strategy, with proven communication skills designed to help parents and patients understand your message quickly and easily so they can move forward with the appropriate treatment.
